You know how the 80′s had Jane Fonda and the tights and leg warmers combo? Well, the modern day equivalent of that are yoga instructors and the ever popular yoga pants. Yoga clothes – yoga pants, specifically – have become so popular that a lot of women nowadays wear them not just for yoga or working out, but even just for running errands or walking their dogs. Why? The answer is simple: they are REALLY comfortable to wear AND they make your legs and butt look good. Here are some tips to help you pick out the ideal yoga pants for you.

What Are the Different Types of Yoga Pants?

Yoga pants generally vary according to length, material used, style, and fit. You have plus size yoga pants, maternity yoga pants, yoga pants made of cotton / lycra / hemp, wide-bottomed, snug or tight-fitting yoga pants, cropped or long yoga pants, wide or foldable waistbands vs. drawstring, etc. For men, the popular choice for yoga pants is the straight-cut style made of either hemp or a combination of cotton and lycra. Long, tight-fit yoga pants are not typically worn by men, although capri-style or cropped yoga pants are also a popular choice. Regardless of the style and material, men’s yoga pants also need to be stretchable, breathable, and comfortable to wear.

Women have more choices when it comes to yoga clothes. For yoga pants, a lot of students wear cropped and tight-fitting ones because these make it easier to transition between different poses without having to worry about stepping on or tripping over loose cloth. Tight-fit yoga pants also make it easier to check the body’s alignment and make sure that the poses are done properly. As for maternity yoga pants, the ideal style is with a foldable and elastic waistband so expectant mothers can adjust the waistband to cover the tummy for additional support. Yoga pants also come in different colors and designs to suit the taste of every yoga practitioner.

What Kind of Yoga Pants Should I Buy?

This relies on several factors, but we have to emphasize that the most important thing in buying yoga pants is comfort. In case that sounds too generic to you, here’s what we mean specifically; your yoga pants shouldn’t restrict your movements in anyway (meaning, stretch and fit are just right) AND are made of material that’s breathable (read: light and airy) and capable of absorbing sweat. Another factor is the type of yoga you will be doing. For fast-paced and more physically demanding styles of yogic practice, we recommend cropped pants. If you’re doing Hot Yoga, cropped yoga pants for women with a snug fit is the way to go.

If you’re not comfortable wearing cropped yoga pants (just like how some people have issues with capri-style pants), then go for long ones but make sure they aren’t too loose — especially the leg bottoms. When it comes to yoga pants, brand is not really high up there on the list of factors to consider. This is because you can easily find affordable, comfortable, and durable yoga pants even at your nearest department store or any online store that sells active wear.

How Much Do I Have to Spend on Yoga Pants?

Yoga pants can cost anywhere from $10 to $50, and can go even higher depending on the brand and where you buy them. If you have a talent for bargain-hunting, you can maybe even get them at a lower price if you buy several pairs at a time. Honestly though, if you plan to do yoga for several years and want yoga clothes that will withstand thousands of asanas, don’t worry too much about the price. Yoga clothes are a solid “investment” and the benefits you will get from doing yoga go over and beyond what money can buy.
